The Indian Society
for Comparative Endocrinology (ISCE) invited Prof. P. Nath to
organize the symposium at the Department of Zoology, Visvabharti,
the abode of the poet-laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Prof. P.
Nath took initiative and organized the event during November
26-28, 2007. In his capacity as the Head of the Department and
also the President of ISCE, Prof. P. Nath extended a warm
welcome to the participants, deligates, senior scientists and
the students at the inaugural function held on 26/11/2007. Prof.
Samit Ray, the then Registrar of the University presided over
while Prof. T. P. Singh, (Retd.), Dept of Zoology, BHU, was the
Chief guest. Prof. Sing urged the senior as well as the young
scientists to work tirelessly for the cause of the students so
that the future of research is secure in this country. The
Indian Society for Comparative Endocrinology took the
opportunity to felicitate some of their members for their
outstanding contributions. Prof. Samir Battacharya (Santiniketan),
Prof. B.B.P.Gupta (Shillong), Prof. G. B.N.Chainy (Bhubaneswar),
Prof. Aparna Datta-Gupta (Hyderabad) and Prof. A.K.Pati (Raipur)
were honoured with a citation for their lifetime contributions
to the field of endocrinology. Keynote address was delivered by
Prof. P.D. Prasada Rao, Former Professor and Head, Dept of
Xoology, Nagpur University, Nagpur. He highlighted the changing
concepts in the regulation of gonadotropin release from the
pituitary of teleostean fishes over the last few decades and
focused on the emerging trends.
The inaguration was followed by the scientific sessions held in
the seminar Hall of the Department of Zoology. The symposium was
graced by senior endocrinologists like Prof. T.P.Singh, Prof.
P.D. Prasada Rao, Prof. Samir Bhattacharya, Prof. E.Vijayan,
Prof. U.C. Goswami, Prof. Akbar-Sha, Prof. M. Aruldhas and also
by the dignitaries, Dr. R.S.Sharma and Dr. B.K.Singh (ICMR, New
Delhi), Dr. Doyil T. Vengayil (DST, New Delhi). The theme of the
first session was 'Hormones and Receptors', and this session was
chaired by Prof. N.K.Subhedar and Prof.Vinod Kumar. In this
session Prof. A. Dutta Gupta delivered a lecture on 'Ecdysteroid
regulated phosphorylation of proteins synthesized in the insect
fat body, the Hexamarines'. Most eloquently she illustrated the
importance of these proteins in larval development. Hexamarine
receptors were identified and cloned from the fat body. She
could locate the receptors in different reproductive tissues as
well as in salivary gland. In the following talk, Dr. Maya
Shedpure underscored the role of pineal in the air-breathing
rhythm in fish and young research scholars presented their work
on the different physiological aspects controlled by hormones. |
